Screen Door Installation Guide
Screen Door Installation Guide: Temporary screen door is complicated to install when there is no structure already prepared in the window frame. In the absence of this rail to hold the sheet of the screen door whether sliding or fitting it is necessary to build a base to support the screen and this base must not be fixed with screws – in order not to damage the aluminum frame and the sealing tape. The biggest challenge is the fact that the windows, in most cases, do not have perfect squares. Always being done manually, the finish tends to leave one side larger than the other. Therefore, it is not recommended to buy a fixed format screen door.
The ideal is to have the parts and make the assembly making the necessary adaptations. If your option is to install with screen doors fixed with Velcro or magnet, the process will be much easier. Velcro and magnets are glued or sewn to the canvas and wall with a special water-resistant glue, usually from the inside of the room with a margin of 5 to 10 cm from the window frame. However, because of the apparent finish, many people prefer to escape this solution. A screen door can be a good improvement for the entrance to your home. Once you have chosen the right door, installation can be done by following the following steps and using basic tools.Want to read more about 5 best temporary screen door?

IMPORTANT: Before starting the installation, it is recommended that the opening be plastered and leveled so that the door can be installed correctly.
Install the frame
Measure the opening of the door (from the outside) where you want the screen door to be installed.
1: First of all, it is necessary that you install the frame of your door.
- Measure the frame and framing, verify all measurements and measure diagonals, making sure they measure the same.
- Verify that the entire span is level.
- Drill holes in the door frame with a drill bit every 30 cm. Then drill the opening with a special drill bit for concrete, using the holes you made in the frame as a guide.
- Secure the frame with concrete anchors, then screw the frame into the span.
2: At a building supply store, find a screen door that is the closest size to the opening of your door. Place the screen door in the opening of your door, adjusting so that it is the same distances from the sides, above and below. This distance must be at least 3 mm on each side and 6 mm on top and bottom. Defining the direction in which the door will open is essential before continuing the work, define whether you will open the door to the right or left side and place the hinges in the indicated place by marking with a pencil to be able to drill later. Make sure the distance between the hinges is correct. Mark on the side of the door and on the frame the location and size of the hinges. It is always recommended to install 3 unless the door exceeds 25 kilos in weight. Check if you are going to need to make a recess in the frame, if you do it is recommended to do it at a depth of 3 mm.
3: Lay the screen door on easels and cut it to the right size, if it is too big. You should cut equal measures on each side, using a circular or jigsaw. However, do not remove more than 1 cm on each side. Carefully open the necessary gaps in the door, guiding yourself by the marks made, fix the hinges to the door with the screws.
4: Put the door in place using chocks to keep it in place mark the position of the hinges on the door and the frame remove the screen door and place it on the easels again. Install the hinges place the screen door back in place, with firm footing secure the hinges in the correct place on the frame remove the shims and install the door handle. Before installing the hinges, you must first decide where the doors will open, outward or inward and in which direction, left or right. So, we select the left and right loops. If you activate imaginative thinking and imagine that the door opens to the left, you will need “left” hinges, if they are on the right, after “right” hinges. The hinges consist of two parts, cards, one of which is screwed onto the door leaf and the second to the box.
5: Test the door, making sure it opens and closes easily then install the door in the frame, repeat the previous step but opening the respective holes in the door frame. Make sure everything works perfectly and your door can be opened and closed properly. Install the overhead spring for automatic door closing, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Insert the screen
Many do not know how to install the door. To facilitate the process, several recommendations must be taken into account. You need to start with “hanging” the screen. An emphasis is placed under the door. Then add the loops together. After alignment, 2 screws are screwed into each element, no more. Then you need to check the closure of the screen and the gaps. If there are errors, they will be eliminated. Then the simulated side is leveled. It often happens that the screen has a small wedding. For example, it can be slightly twisted in the plane. In this regard, do not rush to screw the boxes on both sides. Otherwise, there will be a gap when closing. After closing the door, it is necessary to start aligning the box.
When installing, make sure the box does not extend beyond the outer wall of the room. Even if the screen is crooked, it should not open spontaneously. In other words, the door must not be tilted. In that case, move one side of the box. If the slope is too strong, you will have to change the door, as even the cashiers will not be able to mask the defect.
After alignment, it is necessary to operate a wedge in the lock installation area. To do this, make a notch in the bar and select under the “tongue”. Here a hole is made for hidden fasteners of the door frame. Then, the counter element of the lock is screwed. After fixing – if necessary – the force of the adjacency is adjusted by pressing / pulling the tongue.
Screen Door Installation Tips
- Use spring-loaded hinges and you won’t need to use the overhead spring to close automatically.
- Before installing the screen door, paint it the way you prefer. It is easier when the door is on the easel than in its place.
- A self-centering drill helps to place the screw on the hinges and prevents the wood in the door frame from cracking.
Screen Door Installation Warnings
- When buying a screen door, make sure it is not too small. Ideally, it should be no more than 9 mm smaller than the door.
- When cutting the door, do not remove too much from the sides. Otherwise, you weaken the door.
